Create Shipment Waves

A shipment wave is a group of items used to fulfill customer orders. Before you pick items from your storage racks to be shipped out, you must create a shipment wave to specify which items you need to pick. You can tailor shipment waves to your specific needs to streamline your outbound shipping process.
 
 

Configure Wave Parameters

To create a shipment wave, simply navigate to Warehouse > Shipment Wave. In the Create Wave pane, you can configure a number of wave parameters to suit your needs. As you configure the parameters, you can look to the Wave Preview pane to preview the shipments to be included. To save your wave parameters on your terminal, check out Shipment Wave Presets

  1. Units. Filter shipments by the quantity of items on each shipment. You can set a minimum limit and/or a maximum limit.

  2. SKUs. Filter shipments by the quantity of SKUs on each shipment. You can set a minimum limit and/or a maximum limit.

  3. Total Items. Set the max number of items to allow in the entire shipment wave. This lets you control the total size of the shipment wave.

  4. Total Shipments. Set the max number of shipments to allow in the entire shipment wave. This lets you control the total size of the shipment wave.

  5. Class. Filter shipments by the carrier class used. You can select multiple values in this menu. This can be useful to create different shipment waves for different carriers.

  6. Service. Filter shipments by the ship service used. You can select multiple values in this menu. This can be useful to create different shipment waves for different ship services.

  7. Channel. Filter shipments by the sales channel used. You can select multiple values in this menu. This can be useful to create different shipment waves for different sales channels.

  8. Ship By. If your channel (such as Amazon) supplies a "Must ship by date", you can use this filter to identify these shipments. 

  9. Arrive By. If your channel (such as Amazon) supplies a "Must arrive by date", you can use this filter to identify these shipments. 

  10. Zone. Filter shipments by facility and/or zone inside a facility. This can be useful in larger warehouses where you may have different pickers concentrating on items in different corners of the warehouse.

  11. Partial Shipments slider. Specify whether to include or exclude partial shipments. You may also set this to filter partial shipments that are of a certain age.

  12. Order Tags. Filter shipments based on any order tags. This can be useful for prioritizing items with certain tags.

  13. SKU. Filter shipments by SKU. This can be useful for prioritizing shipments containing items in a special promotion you may be running.

  14. With Options toggle. Filter shipments with customized items. This can be useful for prioritizing items with custom features.

 

Create and Print Shipment Waves

  1. Enter the name of the Processing Container. (Typically, this is named "Ship01" or similar)

  2. Select the desired wave format:

    • Standard. RetailOps will print both pick labels and packing slips.

    • Pick to Order. RetailOps will print packing slips with lot barcodes, eliminating the need for pick labels.

    • SKU Frequency. When using SKU Frequency, a list of SKUs will appear under the 'filter preset' section. This list of SKUs shows a quantity of each, which are available and ready to ship. Selecting a specific SKU will filter the available list of wave-able shipments to only include shipments which have that specific SKU on them. 

    • Bulk Ship. Refer to the section below, “Create Shipment Waves for Bulk Shipments of the Same Product”.

    • Consolidated Ship. RetailOps will print a "Pick to order" packing slip and shipping label on one sheet, using the combined lot weights for the shipment weight. This is intended for use with 4x6 integrated label stock (Example - Uline S-21946) and specific carriers. Waves which were printed as "Consolidated" by mistake cannot be reprinted in another format. Please contact RetailOps Support if you are interested in using this wave type. Presently, only Endicia (USPS) labels are supported.

    • Singles. For rapid processing of single item orders. RetailOps will print ONLY picking labels, with a wave header and wave barcode. Packing slips will print later with the 4x6 shipping label. Learn more here: Singles Waves
    • Console. This standard type wave allows users to send pick instructions to the mobile application under the "Wave Pick" tool. 
    • Console Singles. This singles type wave allows user to send pick instructions to the mobile application under the "Wave Pick" Tool. 

  3. Press the [Create] button.

After you create the wave, all necessary pick labels and packing slips will print out.

 

Create Shipment Waves for Bulk Shipments of the Same Product

There may be times when you want to create a shipment wave based on product. Perhaps you’re running a sale on a Product A and all units of that product are stored in the same location in your warehouse. In one day, you receive 50 customer orders for Product A. In this case, it could be more efficient for you to pick all 50 units of Product A in one shipment wave than to spread out those 50 units among several shipment waves.

  1. At the bottom of the Create Wave pane, toggle the print format to Bulk Ship.

  2. After an item list appears, select the desired item from the list.

    • Items are grouped together by shipment.

    • The number on the right displays the quantity of shipments with the exact combination of items indicated.

  3. Configure any other wave parameters as desired.

  4. Enter the name of the Processing Container.

  5. Press the [Create] button.

  6. In the Shipment Info box, enter the Weight per package.

  7. Optionally, you may fill in any of the following fields:

    • The length, width, and height of the package being shipped

    • Ship class

    • Packaging

    • Signature type

  8. Optionally, you may fill in any of the following fields for international shipments:

    • Package description

    • Consolidated item description

    • Declared value

    • Duties

  9. In the Shipment Info box, press the [Create] button.

Alternate Workflow: SKU Filter

Alternatively, you may use the SKU filter in the Shipment Wave parameters to filter for any shipments with a particular item that may be on sale. The Bulk Ship process described above is useful if you have many single-item orders containing just the sale item. However, if you have many orders that contain the sale item along with other items, the SKU filter provides a more suitable process.

Look to the "Configure Wave Parameters" section above for more info. The SKU filter may only be used in conjunction with Standard and Pick To Order printing formats.

Reprint Past Shipment Waves

If you need to reprint any past shipment waves, look to the pane labeled Waves with processing shipments. This pane displays any shipment waves created in the past 3 weeks along with any waves that contain items that still haven’t been shipped. Note that when you reprint past waves, only labels and packing slips for unshipped items will reprint.

  1. Select the desired wave.

  2. Press the [Reprint] button.

  3. Select whether to reprint Pick Labels, Packing Slips or Pick-to-Order slips.

You can also reprint only a select amount of shipments in a wave.

  1. Select the desired wave.
  2. On the review of wave panel, select the first shipment you want to reprint.
  3. Then hold [Shift]+ click on the last shipment you want to reprint.
  4. View how many shipments have been selected to reprint.
  5. Select whether to reprint Pick Labels, Packing Slips or Pick-to-Order slips.
